Pulmonary Function Testing
Pinwheel Pediatrics is home to a CPSA accredited level II pulmonary function laboratory with a special focus on lung function testing in children, which is primarily done by spirometry. Spirometry is a type of breathing test where patients will use all of their effort to breathe out. We use the results to find out how “big” a patient’s lungs are, and how fast they can breathe in and out. This test often takes a few attempts to learn how to do it as well as possible, which is where our caring and supportive team will help meet the patient where they are and provide developmentally appropriate test instructions and motivation. This test can be ordered by your care team without the need for respiratory consultation.
Allergy Testing
Allergy testing can be a helpful test in those patients with concern for allergies – whether they be seasonal or due to some of our furry friends. Allergy testing is completed with skin prick testing, which allows the body to “see” the allergen, and mount a response if a person is allergic, in the form of an itchy hive.
Please note: allergy testing at Pinwheel Pediatrics is limited to common aeroallergens (animals, trees, grasses, weeds, molds), and does not include evaluation of food allergies, venomous insects, or medications.
Oximetry
Oximetry is a test that monitors oxygen levels and heart rate over the course of the night. For patients with certain breathing disorders, this test can be quite helpful to determine if a patient has normal saturations, or if there are changes that may require further testing or treatment. This test can be ordered by your care team without the need for respiratory consultation.
